main dealers-how do they get away with charging so

our car needed servicing(first service since we got it) and we took it to our local garage where we've taken previous cars .for the service it cost £98,out of interest my husband phoned our local bmw main dealer and asked how much the service would be(anyone of a nervous disposition beware)£419 plus parts! thats right £419.how do they justify this? karen

hi karen,we got our first service free from peugeot but our second was £296 which i thought was quite dear..but if you want to sell it later it will have full service history with the dealer and dnt know with your car but if we get it mended at a different garage other then a peugeot dealer garage it effects our warrenty.it is scandalous how they can get away with it..but the countrys going to pot lol so........
