Crikey Fred-what a disgrace the Royal Mail has become by the sounds of it. No wonder my mother complains. I just thought it was her being her usual complaining self!! The post over here in NZ is pretty good. Rarely do things go missing (within the country) & always delivered following day if local. 2 days for the rest of the country. No second post-Everythings "first class!!". Sorry to boast. But been there with Royal Mail-they managed to lose my graduation certificate between Birmingham & Surrey. Never did get another 1. Hoping this gets there....Zoe, Wellington, NZ

There is a problem with theft over here Zoe. An undercover camere was put inside a post office sorting room a while ago ,and the things it showed was amazing . Cheques being taken ,ditto with parcels, mail being thrown into rubbish bags,i could go on. It,s only a few doing this sort of thing ,but that,s all it takes. We even had one postman up here in the north in court ,he threw mail away ,over a three week period because he couldn,t be bothered to deliver it.[his own words] A far cry from the 60,s when i joined the postal service ,a week of filling forms in references to get ,and to cap it all you needed to have a rellie ,or friend working there or you had no chanceFred.

On a positive note I posted 8 letters last Monday afternoon from here in Wellington, New Zealand to different UK addresses & got my first reponse via email on Thursday evening. SO between the NZ postal system & Royal Mail I reckon that's a pretty good turn around time by anyones standards!! Mind you my mother used to regularly post parcels out to us from the UK but every other 1 never made it here. Needless to say she's stopped posting parcels!!! I always wonder if there's a similar problem in mail as there oftern is at airports with staff rifling through bags in order to find goodies to steal. Best wishes...Zoe

I have a postcard of my g-grandmothers, posted c. 1900, inviting her out to tea that afternoon, and asking her to confirm by return of post if she could come!!!Obviously in those days you could post a card in the morning and it was delivered that same day. Now you are lucky if it is 3 weeks- that's progress for you!!!

Why is it when two Christmas cards are posted to the same address on the same day they arrive a week apart? Has anyone read any really old postcards where someone would write in the morning to say what time they would be home that night? Happy memories for some !!!

Same here with the London service at work, up until a month or so back it arrived around 8.30-9.00. Now it's anything from 11.30 until 2.30, we still get a second post (reply-paid mail) which now get there before the "first" post! Needless to say, we now use fax or e-mail where we can.

i can only speak for the london postal service, but its an absolute disgrace...they put in secret cameras at a main sorting office, mail was thrown away, some even stolen! we used to get two deliveries a day,now its one...mail used to arrive about 8am,now its mid afternoon...letters regularly delivered to wrong adresses...went to have a moan to my postman, cos he was delivering someone elses mail to my adress, and he couldnt speak english...royal mail stinks. best wishes....bryan.
