My 6 year old son is growing a plant at school now...some kind of bean. He keeps asking me to buy some flowers and get some food colouring too apparently they do a lot of this kind of thing. Very hard to find out exactly what though! Sheila

Hi Janet When my children were at Infant and Junior school they used to plant a bulb in a bowl and each year these were entered in to the local Spring flower show Bren

Yes Judith, they are still grown using a school paper towel and a plastic jar. I think they tend to leave them on the classroom window ledge now and some schools plot the growth for maths interest.

HI I CAN REMEMBER THIS BUT IT WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL WE USED TO GROW THE PLANTS AND THEN SELL AT THE SUMMER FAYRE.I CAN ONLY REMEMBER GROWING COLEUS THOUGH AND CRESS, I SUPPOSE ITS BECAUSE THEY ARE EASY TO GERMINATE, ALL MY KIDS GREW CRESS AT SCHOOL. I KNOW THEIR ARE SOME SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND THAT HAVE GARDENS OR VEGETABLE PATCHES WHICH I THINK IS A GOOD IDEA AS IT TEACHES THE KIDS SOME RESPECT FOR PLANTS AND WILDLIFE AS WELL AS SHOWING THEM HOW TO GROW PLANTS/VEG. IT NEVER HAPPENED AT ANY OF OUR SHCOOLS THOUGH. I USED TO GET MY KIDS TO GROW PLANTS EVERY YEAR WHEN THEY WERE LITTLE WHICH THEY LOVED,AND THE SUNFLOWERS WERE ALWAYS TO SEE WHO COULD GET THE BIGGEST ONE. HAPPY MEMNORIES LOL SANDRA

Did anyone else used to have this or was it a local thing. At one week of the year you brought in 5p and could buy a plant some of which were bizzie lizzies, colius, these silvery plants I cant think of the name and they were grown in plastic cups. My younger friends think ive gone mad when I mention it but it did happen honest!! Jan x
