Did you play truant from school? I am sure many of you did. If so, what did you get up to? I played truant one day (one of the many) and went with a couple of boys to Hampstead Heath and walked into a bog. My white socks were a horrible looking mess. I knocked on the door of a nearby house and asked if I could clean myself up. I washed my feet and threw my socks away. My mother never did ask what had happened to my socks. |

I played truant from school once, this was back in the 1950's it was on a hot summers day and a group of us decided to 'sort of' take the day off and enjoy the sunshine and as we all lived in an outlying village we thought we wouldn't be caught or indeed be seen as there were plenty of places to hide, but we got a bit too complacent having a wail of a time and laughing at the rest of the kids still in school, along came a man drivng a car and he stopped and got out and asked us which school we attended and did we know who he was, we were all quite rude to him saying " we don't care who you are so mind your own buisiness and besides we're not allowed to speak to strangers" we had the smile well and truly wiped from our faces when he announced that he was the area truant officer, he took us back to school there and then and not only were we punished for it by the school head, we were also punished by our parents, I don't know which was worse, but we never ever played truant again, .... just goes to show, you never know who's watching! There must be lots of funny stories out there. Another time that I played truant was when I had to crawl along a pipe because of marshy ground. The things we did! Sylvia |

Hi Sylvia Ican remember bunking off school just the once ,my friend and i where so scared that we spent the day in a public convience,what a waste .Then we both wrote each other a note to take to school the next day,the teacher never cottoned on . Val GC |

Of course during the war it was a lot easier to play truant. You always had an excuse for not attending school - bombing raids etc. etc. |
