Worse still when you see parents allowing children to travel without seatbelts fastened.Statistics show that many accidents happen within a few miles of home. Driving them to school is a vital time to be safety aware but not all parents seem to care.

I think it should be mandated that anyone ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt, or worse yet, anyone who has caused an accident, to ride a few shifts on an ambulance (as part of their community service) and see first hand for themselves the devestation that results from not wearing a seatbelt or the needless pain and suffering they cause from careless driving. I've done 911-EMS (Emergency Medical Services) for over 20 years and know 1st hand......it would, for sure, make one think twice before they got behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking or using a cell phone while driving. As for seatbelts, it was a rare occassion that I ever pulled a dead person from a vehicle who was wearing a seatbelt. The trauma of EMS personal, after cleaning up after thoughtless people, is a whole nother story. J

Just yesterday I saw a girl driver, probably in her 20s, driving along with her mobile to her ear and a cigarette in the other hand. She was negotiating a mini roundabout at the time! It makes me sooooooo mad! At least she had her seat belt on though! I work for a vehicle breakdown/recovery company who are called out by the police to pick up the wrecks from accidents. If all drivers were made to see some of these vehicles, especially from speed accidents on M25, maybe it would make them think twice about driving without having full control of their vehicles. On second thoughts, it probably wouldn't! Most drivers think it won't happen to them, but PLEASE if you have children in the car, make sure they are securely strapped into an appropriate restraint, and don't let them jump about, unsecured, EVER. Even if you are only going 100 yards down the road. IT IS AGAINST THE LAW. Sue

I see no harm in using a proper hands free in a car ,it,s no more distracting than listening to the radio or cd whilst driving. My phone answers when i get a call, and i can listen, and speak without taking either hand off the wheel.I normally tell the person calling that i will call back in a couple of minutes and go to the nearest layby. If i say that the driver of the car ,re the accident is reportedly seen with a phone in his hand when he hit the bairn ,you know my feelings about that sort of use.Smoking should be banned whilst driving ,that has been the cause of a few accidents, and anyone caught without a seatbelt should be banned, not fined, these people invalidate their insurance driving in this manner.I even saw one driver last week [a wagon driver yet] reading a map ,doing about fifty miles an hour ,and that,s stupid.Fred.

Have also seen men shaving and what about the adults who carry small children on their laps? Makes my blood boil - so irresponsible! I once saw a car pull up outside my house (Ford Escort, so not huge) and 9 (yes NINE) people got out!

I have just come from the car after following a tosser on a mobile, it being hot he had his window down so as I gave a long blast on the horn while passing which seemed to upset him. (Yes I suppose I was wrong to but they annoy me so much). A police officer on the boards said they are enforcing the law but I haven't heard of any convictions. Has anyone else? I drove taxis for a while and was amazed that when you asked some parents to belt up their kids many would ask "what for". Bob

On the telly a little while ago was one of these police chase type programmes. The thing that amazed me that the police driver, whilst putting his foot to the floor, was using a hand held radio mic clipped to his lapel to relay the progress of the chase and there was a colleague of his in the passenger seat not doing at lot!! Not very clever in my view!!! Martin

was only thinking this morning, that it's not much use having these laws, if they are not being enforced. Although there seems to be a reduction in the use of hand held mobiles whilst driving, there is still plenty to be seen. Maybe the general public should have a number to call and report the licence numbers, with say 3 separate reports from different individuals resulting in a fine.? Hands free sets are not that dear, so why not use them. Val
