Lindy I know what you mean. Some people are just miserable and don't want to know. We didnt speak to my Mother in law for 5 years but I persuaded my husband to go and see her cos he'd regret it if anything ever happened. He did and now we see her once a fortnight. She sees the kids too which makes her happy. As an outsider I could see how upset this man was and it made me think. You don't always apply the same thinking to your own family but I just felt for this chap.

How very sad! As much as I have tried to approach my f i l he wants nothing to do with me. He is eighty years old and one day is going to need help. I was there for him when his late wife died.. I hope his girlfriend is there for him when he is too old to care for himself. Lindy

Poor old boy. The world has changed don't you think? Most people think of themselves these days and no one else. He must be feeling so wretched. I don't suppose he lives in Hertfordshire? I'd go and see him for a bit of company. Jo.

Thanks. I could've cried for this man. He was lovely but obviously families are very complex and maybe there was a reason for his grandchikdren not to keep in contact with him. I know how I have felt when a loved one or a friend has died and there is too much regret in this world.

I met a man today who was 93 years old. He had recently lost his wife and 4 months before that, his son who was 65. His daughter in law and grandchildren lived 4 doors away and after his son died they moved away, leaving no forwarding address. this gentleman was obviously still upset about both his wife and son and was on the verge of tears throughout the whole time I was with him. I asked him if there was any way of contacting his grandchildren. He replied that they knew his phone number and could contact him if they wanted to. He didn't know where they had moved to. While I was listening to his story I felt very lucky to still have both of my grandmothers alive and although I have not visited them for a while felt a sudden urge to go and see them. I also thought of all the lonely people out there who have no-one or maybe through a family argument have no contact with their families. I think what I am trying to say is, if you have someone that you haven't seen for a while for whatever reason, they are probably feeling very lonely and would love a visit from you. You may be greeted with hostility and indeed this man probably would be very angry if his grandchildren turned up on his doorstep but I'm sure that would disappear after a few minutes and it would mean the world to him before he eventually passes over.
