cairo museum was stunning. bring your own toilet paper. you'll get charged a quid for three pieces. no kidding! the pyramids are great. we went to see where they buried king kephron. loads of begging children with disfigurements. watch out for con men. but i wouldn't have missed it for the anything

Just a thought....your daughter might want to check out just how safe it is to travel in Egypt at this time. My nephew, who's in the US Army, was deployed this week to Egypt to protect her boarders. Better to be safe than sorry..... Judy

Went to Cairo many years ago, just after the 6-day war. We were the only tourists. The only problem was I had a British passport so they would only let me in for 6 days. My husband could stay as long as he liked. My Dutch passport had expired. We had just gone there on chance en route from Nigeria to London. We booked a tour of the pyramids etc . etc. and found we were the only ones. Our guide said "what do you want to see". Even the big King David Hotel was closed. They didn't like you taking photos near bridges etc. We were conned by an Arab who took us to a night club, and he bought his daughter along too - cost us drinks the whole evening! It is quite a climb in the pyramids. My husband got onto a camel, so yours truly had to do the same - or walk. Its alright getting on, it's getting off that's the problem. I also had a dress on, would have been better to have had trousers! Sylvia

Shirley - I went almost 20 years ago and stayed with a friend who was working there - great experience! I would agree with all advice given so far, innoculations very important, as are malaria tablets. If she will be a lone traveller, or just with other females, she may get pestered, stared at etc., however stick to main tourist areas and should be fine! PS Horse-riding round the pyramids at dusk not to be missed!!

Almost forgot - you need to get your innoculations up to date well in advance and take anti-malaria tablets too. And yes, just about everyone had at least a days worth of a dodgy tummy. Only drink bottled water and watch out for ice cubes in drinks, salads and fruit that may have been washed in contaminated water. Don't let this put you off though - Karnak and the Valley of the Kings were stunning. Rick.

Hi Shirley, My eldest son went to Egypt two years ago and it was a package tour. Five days on the boat on the Nile including hotels and tour guide. It was round about the end of July that he went. I don't remember the name of the Agency but I shall ask him when I see him later this evening. Please tell your daughter not to drink any water that she has not opened herself. My boy and his companions all got very ill and luckily for them there was a doctor who was also on the tour. They only drank bottled water. It is also hotter then hell. Lindy;-))

Hi Shirley, November to March would be the best months to go as they are coolest. You get temperatures up to about 40 degress outside of this period. Don't even think about going in summer !! There are loads of operators who offer good value nile cruises and I'd be tempted to go for an overall package (normally full board and lots of excursions included). I flew from London to Cairo and stayed 2 nights there, long enough to see the pyramids at Giza and get some retail therapy ! Then I caught an internal flight down to Luxor and cruised down to Aswan, stopping at all the tourist spots on the way. Aswan is unmissable - one of the prettiest places I have ever been. Rick.
