Hi, I've come across a number of unusual names while researching my family tree and I was wondering if any of you would be able to tell me if they are real names of if the chances are they have just been mistranscribed. The names are Beatria, Benson, Eli, Evelina, Israel, Letilia and Purser. Thank you! Amy x

P.S. - These are first names not surnames, just in case anyone was wondering! Amy x

Thanks Terri, that's one I can take off the list of puzzles now I know other people have that name! Thank you! Amy x

Lynne

Amy I would think Letilia should be Letitia but it could be a name in it's own right! Lynne

a lot of people don't cross t's, or they cross two at the same time, so Letilia could be Letitia. And I can easily see Beatrice coming out as Beatria. The rest look likely enough

Hi all, Thank you so much for all your replies think that's solved a few little mini mysteries for me! Still got no idea what Purser is, or could be! Ah well, you can't win 'em all! Thanks again! Amy x

Amy, There are several Pursers on FreeBMD and the 1881 census. The names on the census seem to have corresponding entries on FreeBMD. Crista
