Sorry Helen, didn't even notice your message hiding away there. I'll leave it for now. I'm sure the editor will correct anything wrong.

I like closing in, it sounds intriguing. Helen:- A good idea, but by the time Daniel had typed out all the message someone would have replied with "but what Daniel" LOL Chrissie

I refer to it as a hobby. Someone else i am quoating called it a sport. Which i too think is wrong but i like the way it reads.

Daniel, I have to say I'm very impressed with your writing. I think you succeeded in the most important area... keeping the reader interested. I certainly was. suggestions...what about ' genealogical age gap decreases' or 'narrows'? best wishes Christine

Daniel Report 31 Jul 2004 23:54

I have decided to use, The genealogical age gap closes in I think it is good and doesn't give away too much so people will want to see what it's about.

Daniel Genes R will let you have paragraphs - but for some reason I can't fathom, not when you start a thread. If I'm right then this posting should be in paras. I think what you have to do if starting a new thread is to put in a title and post it, and then add your own reply to your own thread putting in the detail. Helen

A gap 'closing in' can have negative connotations, as if it is something bad happening, but it does add a touch of humour here, particularly if you like to add just a short sentence about genealogy bringing the generations together in spite of themselves or something similar!

Daniel

Daniel Report 31 Jul 2004 23:35

What do you all reckon about: The genealogical gap closes in

Felicity

Felicity Report 31 Jul 2004 23:34

I think just 'closes' would be fine.

Daniel

Daniel Report 31 Jul 2004 23:31

Hi Felicity. Thanks for the comments. Do you know of a good word for something that tightens? Genes R. wont let me have paragraphs but i asure you on my processor its all laid out correctly. (i hope)

Felicity

Felicity Report 31 Jul 2004 23:30

I too like the sound of 'an old person's sport' even if it is technically a 'pastime'. I can now consider myself 'sporty' which I definately never was before!

Felicity

Felicity Report 31 Jul 2004 23:26

I see Annie made the same point about 'whets' as I was writing. :-)

Daniel

Daniel Report 31 Jul 2004 23:24

I read somewhere someone calling it ` an old person's sport` I'm just quoating that and actually, i think it sounds better when reading.

Hi Daniel, You are not being a bother at all. I think your article is excellent - articulate, good use of punctuation, and your thoughts flow sensibly and don't flit around all over the place. English is a rich and living language, so there are many aspects of it that are not 'right' or 'wrong' but as an old pedant, I do have a few suggestions. Use or reject them as you wish of course - a gap generally 'closes' rather than 'tightens' 'an old person's sport.' should read 'an old person's sport'. Whe you use this phrase at the end you punctuate it as I suggest, so it may just be your typo the first time. Whets the appetite (as in sharpening) is more accurate/correct than wets the appetite. ......quest (for) family knowledge - I think you left a word out. Also, it reads as one long paragraph, and I think it would benefit from being split into several smaller ones. That separates your points and makes it easier for the reader. I'll leave it to you to decide if and where to paragraph, and only make suggestions if you ask. It may just be the vagaries of the website that's put it all together the way it is. I think you have made a really good job of it so far; well done!

Hi Daniel, I've nothing to add to what has already been said unless you would agree that genealogy is a pastime rather than a sport? Well done you! Magsx

Really? Well I never knew there were 2 versions of Wet. Will fix that and add that extra sentence you advised on.
