Thanks girlies. Thank heavens I am not alone. I feel so uplifted now. I felt like a fool when he emailed me back today . Some people lol!! It's 2 am and after much searching on the 1837 site ( about 4 hours and a small fortune fortune) I found the birth of my long lost grt grandma - so a happy obsessive addicted bunny's off to la la land. Oh happy days Debi

Not at all. My gt grandfather had a witness at his wedding that sounded very familiar. I remembered he had been staying as a visitor with my gt grandad on census night in 1881 and they had both been christened in the same church. They were obviously childhood friends. Witnesses are useful clues to family relationships, as they are often parents or siblings. I also liked the names of a couple, one from a Gloucestershire wedding in 1858, Alban Buckle, and one from a wedding in Stoke Newington, Ellen Alabaster. Helen

It's imperative!!! 4 witnesses have enabled me to verify information I wasn't sure of, as they turned out to be either sisters, brothers or in-laws of my direct relative. Don't forget relations can be away from home during the census; in service or at sea, but families usually get together for a marriage. Maggie

Yes I do and have found some useful information like the witness on my Great Great Grandmothers certificate (2nd marriage) turned out to be her eldest son who I had no idea about and he married on the same day with my G.G.Grandmother witnessing his wedding. On another certificate I found the witness married another relation a few years later. I think it's well worth checking them out Sheila
