Same has happened to me...they said that they made a mistake last year and that I had not advised them of any changes (untrue) and I had to pay back over £1000. Just had another two letters saying the same again. Rang them and they were about as much help as a chocolate fire guard. They need to seriously change their way of working as it seems that many people are affected. And this was supposed to make things easier!!!!

The tax credit system is ill-thought out and the Inland Revenue haven't got the resources or expertise to make it work properly.

do you know the tax office really get up my nose.i hope to god no-one else gets a letter asking for the money back.they can never get it right with anyones tax.they asked my husband for £1300 due to tax not being paid but he was having none of it and investigated more .what happened was he had two tax codes and he filled in his self assesment form in wrong.i also had the wrong details for my tax credit i had someone elses name on my national insurance code.we reported it and it took another phonecall 2 months later to sort it out.all i can say is to get the people who you know to get it checked out before paying back the money.the tax office won't put the problem right but when we owe them money they are on your back!

Yep has just happend to me. Got to pay back about 500 pounds. Not happy as the letter I got made out that I knew I was getting too much and didnt bother to tell them. The fact that each time anything change I told them straight away dosnt amount to anything, and Im basicly being accused of theft. The phone call I made re said letter was blistering. Maggie
