Margaret , This news is awful not just for the local people but people everywhere doing geneaology , i am researching my husbands family from Ramsgate and will be stuck now ,do they know how it started? So sorry you have lost such a historical building. Chrissy.x

Margaret Its awful when these things happen, i can remember when Norwich Library went up in flames 10 years ago, it was heartbreaking! Luckily the archives and family records were mostly stored elsewhere, but even so much was lost that day. On the upside, the new library they built to replace it is a fantastic place to visit, and the family history section is really good. So out of a disaster and all that..... Lets hope that Ramsgate has not lost too much and is up and running again as soon as possible. Yvette

HI MARGARET i saw it on the news last night, so tragic all that history destroyed, if its an arsonist i hope they get him/her, i haven't had any tv or radio on, you say the registry office has now been set alight, have these people no respect for english history. Some of these documents, books and the building cannot be replaced its lost for ever. They should be ashamed of themselves, sandra

Heard about it on the news, it is such a shame if it was started on purpose lets hope they catch the ones that started it.

That's really bad news Margaret. Have they discovered how it started yet?

Margaret That's awful. Hopefully important documents will have been copied and kept elsewhere, but history is full of libraries being burnt either accidentally or on purpose. As a former librarian it grieves me to think of all the useful information that has been lost or destroyed. Let's be glad that we still have a wealth of material and that you have done all the look-ups you did before this disaster. Nell

Disaster has hit our local library in Ramsgate Kent the building was to have celebrated 100 years old on in October it caught alight on Friday night luckley no one was hurt ,it is now just a shell but think of all the achives that were there and books. Ramsgate has a lot of history to it. But the people of Ramsgate are now starting a restoration plan to build it as to how it was before this terrible fire. I feel so sad about it i have spent many an hour there looking for things to do with my family. UPDATE Have now just heard on the radio Ramsgate Registry office had a fire as well Margaret
