I have just been reading through the new terms and conditions. dont understand half of them but notice that it says to be a full member you have to be at least 18 years old. Did the old ones state this? Its a bit unfair on anyone under 18 that wishes to do their family tree. Surely that is discrimination or am i wrong? Cant see why there is an age limit.

Ha ha, What a stupid rule. Can only cause more harm than good and if they want my money, they gonna have to let me stay. I've been here for over a year without a whisper of age problems, why start discrminating now?

I wonder if Daniel has seen that? I know he's under 18, yet he is genuine, having written a relevant article, and making contributions to the boards. It should be 16 if they have to have a lower age limit - after all, there's plenty you can do at 16! Mandy :)

This could be because about 6 months ago there was a lot of abuse of the system by youngsters in their school lunch break, using foul language and generally being disruptive. having said that, theyw ere not full members as at the time you didn't have to be to access the boards, only to send e mails. Surely, given that they 'police' the boards so thoroughly these days, the age for full members could be dropped to 16. Otherwise youngsters will just get their parents to join and use there addreses. I dont think for one moment GR will chuck out existing members under 18. I just think that they wont take any new members on under that age. Daniel:- I suggest you mail GR direct, & ask where you feature in all this.& what will happen if you want to rejoin when your time runs out. Elaine x

we can't lose daniel, he's got an old head on young shoulders [te he] and is obviously very interested in genealogy, by the amount in his tree and his knowledge that he shares, i for one think 16 is ok, but then their are kids of 12 plus interested and i for one don't think they should be discouraged in an interesting hobbie. lol sandra

Not specifically I don't think. And if they do they obviuosly don't check the answers.

Just checked they ask your date of birth so if they accept your money after that then thats down to them and surely there can be no comeback on you if you are under 18.

I was 12 when I got into genealogy (through a school assignment!), and would have certainly joined GR if it had been around then! I can see GRs reasons, but surely an email to a parent/gardian checking if it was OK for thier under 18 to join, whould suffice?

If this rule was there before the update then it's not going to effect anyone now.

I'm not concerned. Like I said I would just use my dad's, mum's whoever's name if i had to re-register. And I would of course want my money back for the rest of the year to pay for the new account. But I don't think it'll come to that.
