I went to an all girls secondary modern school in Hertfordshire and it was not a bit like the school in the series. We were not failures and we did learn valuable skills-cooking, sewing, how to play hockey! I enjoyed school and I was very academic apart from maths. School was strict but so were my parents but late 60's/early 70's secondary modern was brilliant. Viv

It's true that teachers can't touch the kids, although there are exceptions, physical restraint can be used to prevent injury to the pupil, other pupils, staff or visitors or damage to property. However this can only be done by a member of staff trained in appropriate restraint techniques and who has been elected to do so by the head teacher. Don't I sound like a know all. I'm not really, just a teacher who works with violent pupils and who has been trained in self defence and restraint, its not fun and I often get assaulted or accidentally hurt. But I admit that I am a leetle beet crazy

I went to a secondary modern in Halewood just outside Liverpool, we didn't have any farm animals or manure, just a rabbit and a hamster that hung itself. It put me off pets for life. Apart from that I enjoyed school, but I resented the intro to the programme that stated that sec. mod. pupils had been written off as failures, I'm not a failure, I'm just crazy

Was busy celebrating wedding anniversary so missed the programme. I remember having more cookery lessons a week than maths. When I told my husband (he went to a boys only grammar school) he really couldn't believe it. Without a microwave I wouldn;t know what to do! So much for lessons. As for sewing a button on - forget it. Jane

I took Geography GCSE and will be taking at A level. The tests we took recently were on Population diagrams, co ordinates, migration and physical processes like freeze thaw etc.

Whatever you say Joy, whatever you say. There were 2 threads about it. How did you not notice?

I watch it but don't think people are actually like that. How the hell those muppets can't tell where London, Plymouth, Liverpool etc is on a map really does make my generation out to be thick as Rural Science animal manure, which is not the case. As i'm sure your own children/grandchildren prove.
