I am a serving soldier currently in germany and i would just like to say how sorry we feel for the people of Bocastle. Just remember that the people of england and world wide are thinking of how much you have suffered. Please remember that we are all thinking of you everyday

Yes, our thoughts go out to them but they have already shown incredible community spirit. The wonderful thing about the British, yes we can be a miserable lot sometimes, but when the chips are down, when it really matters, everyone really pulls together to help each other out. Thankfully there were no serious injuries or deaths. I was on holiday in Lynmouth last year and read all about that disaster there 52 years ago, when sadly 34 people were killed, those helicopter crews at boscastle were fantastic. X Karen

I know Boscastle quite well, having been there on and off for the last 40-odd years, last time about 3 years ago with my father-in-law shortly before he died. I am sure that, given time it will be restored to its former beauty and tranquility. The danger is that too much restoration will be done at the same time in the same style: the charm of old communities like Boscastle is that they have evolved over decades or hundreds of years, not all slung up at the same time, thus a single building may have been built as a cowshed in 1600, been added to in 1700, been converted to a blacksmiths in 1800, into a fisherman's cottage in 1850, and so on, different functions and alterations for the building next door, not zoned or dictated to by planners but growing endemically with the needs of the inhabitants. Thank God for the RAF rescue helicopters too, for the bravery of the crews and the fact that the defence cuts haven't cut their numbers yet.
