Christine Just back from a night out with the girls hic. Yes I remember the Charles and Anne stamps I think there are a couple up in the attic somewhere with some of my relics from the past like school reports (must do better next term I should imagine). I used to have a Black Sambo money box and also dare I say it a goliwog which I got from Robinsons -I think- after saving all those goliwogs on their jars. Now I shall probably be reported for saying goliwog but I don't know the politically correct name to use. Pat

Yes, Elizabeth, I remember the Sunny smiles. We did it every year in the Methodist Sunday School. We also had Missionary Boxes in which we put our coins for Methodist Missionary work overseas. The boxes would not be allowed these days they were called Black Sambo and you put your coins in Sambo's mouth. Saw one on T.V. the other day on one of these Car Boot Sale programmes.

The booklets with kids pictures in were called 'Sunny smiles' and I think they were for national Children's homes

When I saw the "Oldies" bit I thought it's not one for me, then when I read the message I remembered doing that sort of thing - oops, there's a sobering thought! Yes, I remember that very well; all my friends and I enjoyed doing that, at the same time raising money for the needy. My son's primary school does that, and it's only been operational since 1999! So it's still going on. From "Oldie" Glenys (oh alright then - I'm nearly 48!!).

I remember something like that, I think that each of the pockets like you say had a picture on it and that they were all bordered with bright green. I am unable to remember if it was for a mile of coins though but can remember that what at the time seemd like a very old lady giving us a talk before the envelopes were handed out. I also remember that it was for more than one year.

Didn't have mile of coins, But I do remember having little booklets with childrens pictures in poorer countries, and having people buy the picture.. something like sixpence- a shilling. The form that made to most used to grt a certificate.. Pat

Thank you all for your replys this will show my family that I'm not having senior moments and that at least some of my little grey cells are still there. Saying that messages I am posting are coming up twice and truly I am only clicking once so perhaps I really have lost the plot! Pat

Jane I remember that, it was ages before I knew what it was that the pennies were going to. At my school we collected on a Monday.

At one of my grand daughter's school's they do a similar thing now. Everyone takes their spare pennies to school and then they make a line right around school. They choose different charities each time. When I was at school we took money in each friday for Petzalotzi (sorry about the spelling). It was years before I realised this was the name of the village we helped. Think it's Africa Jane

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER WHEN THEY WERE AT SCHOOL COLLECTING MONEY FOR WHAT WAS CALLED A "MILE OF COINS". THIS WAS A CARD WITH ABOUT 5 SECTIONS AND I THINK 4 LITTLE ENVELOPES IN EACH SECTION, THE IDEA WAS THAT YOU FILLED EACH LITTLE ENVELOPE WITH CASH THEN RETURNED IT TO SCHOOL. I BELIEVE THE MONEY RAISED SENT POORER CHILDREN AWAY TO A SCHOOL CAMP FOR A WEEK. MY FAMILY THINK I AM MAKING THIS UP BUT I CAN STILL SEE QUITE CLEARLY IN MY MIND THOSE CARDS. HOPE SOMEONE REMEMBERS SO THAT MY FAMILY DOES NOT THINK I'M IN TOTAL DECLINE. PAT
