I left school in 1964 and thought that the school dinners were very good. Unlike the unhealthy meals that seem to get given to the children nowadays.

I remember having to eat meat, we weren't allowed to leave until we had eaten everything, and I didn't like meat. the meat always had fat and gristle so we used to fight to sit by the windows because along that side there were iron grids that let the warm air up from the cellars. We used to drop the fat and gristle through the grids to the cellar, we never got found out so I presume there were mice or something down there that enjoyed our dinner.

At primary school we were really lucky and had a wonderful cook. I think all schools must have had the same recipes though, as we all seem to have had the same food just cooked in different ways! Secondary school wasn't as good, we had a canteen system but at least we could choose. I did a short spell of work experience back at my own primary school and yes, you've guessed it, I stayed for school dinners!! Yummm. Mandy :)

Sad, but I loved frog spawn pudding, along with tapioca et al, so long as I managed to stop the cook dumping jam in it.
