This was the heading that attracted my attention in our weekly paper. Some Archaeologists in the Ukraine have found a Crimean War Medal(1854-56) for a Pte J Clarkson of 7th Foot and are trying to trace his family, believed to be from Preston, Lancs. Next month sees the commemoration of the Crimean War and anyone able to prove they are a descendant of the mystery war hero could be invited to join the celebrations in the Ukraine. Historic records reveal a Pte John Clarkson was wounded in the Crimean War. Little is known about Pte John Clarkson, but military historians believe he was wounded at the Battle of Alma on 20 September 1854. During the battle, the 7th Foot was part of the Light Divisionand won great reknown for its accomplishments and was awarded with 5 Victoria Crosses. Archivists for the 7th Foot which later became the City of London Regiment in 1881 and is now the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, say the 7th Foot recruited from Lancashire and Yorkshire. This is a rare opportunity for the relatives of someone who fought in the Crimean War to receive a medal commemorating his actions. If you think you could be a relative of Pte John Clarkson, contact the Evening Post on 01772838103or you can email: lep(.)newsdesk@lep(.)co(.)uk Please remove brackets.
