I dont see what the problem with that is and personaly I dont think it goes far enough, I think all tree,s on here should be open to public view, like when you go to new names added you see forname, surname, place of birth sometimes and date of birth mostly circa, then ur only option is write an email with as much info as poss, send it and await a reply and 90% of the time they not who you are looking for. weras if it also had a view tree button you could go to the tree see who ther partner, children and parents were and have better idea wether its the person you are looking for or not. And to those people that think someone might nick there information well its quite simple keep your tree on a genioligy prog on your computer not on the internet, I thought the purpose of these sort of internet sites was to share information not be paranoid about someone nicking there info. There is always the option to send feedback directly to GC...the point I am trying to make is that everyone seems to be jumping up and down and beating their breasts over every little change...I've kept schtum till now, but I'm starting to get a bit irritated at trawling through the threads complaining about how things are done, just to get to the useful stuff! I know I will be berated and cussed for speaking against the grain here, but what the heck! :o))

My point was that by sending an e-mail I was also giving permission to view without knowing it! Most of my e-mails to people are helping them with their tree, hardly ever to do with any connection we might have, so most of the time they don't need or want to see my tree. I'm not bothered about the colours etc. I just like to know what I am doing! nell

I personally think its a better system - you have the option still (you do NOT have to allow others to view your tree) and its easier than having to go into a different screen to allow/remove access. I do think alot of people on these boards are picking fault purely 'cos they don't like things different - I haven't yet found any of the problems mentioned on other threads, and as long as I can find the info I need and help others to do the same I don't see the point in nit-picking about colours and other irrelevant things.

Not to mention that every time you send an e-mail to someone they can view your tree even though your e-mail may be totally unconnected with the message you sent. Although they can't change your tree, what is to stop them copying details without your permission. I wouldn't have known I was doing this and needed to delete permission when I sent an e-mail unless I had received this message fromGR. It doesn't make it obvious when you are sending a message that you are also granting permission for people to view. nell

Why did they change that? The old system of granting permission seemed to work well. As you say, you will probably end up with permission for loads of trees that you are not connected to. Does not seem like a change for the better!!!

Yesterday there was a thread here about people finding they had permission to view other people's trees when they hadn't asked to. I found I had permission to see 3 trees which were no interest to me at all and which I hadn't asked to see. I e-mailed GC and this is what they said in reply: "When someone contacts you via email, permission is automatically given to view their tree. They can remove this if they uncheck the box in the contact email. Please do not be concerned about security. You can only see the details of the tree. It is not possible to make any changes to it." nell
