I am wanting to obtain a Death Certificate for my Grandfather. I have his date of death and where he is buried (I've seen the grave). But when i've looked at BMD website, it's not on there yet. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks. Manda.xx:-)

As you know the date and the place, you can write to the register office for the relevant district, stating his name, the date and place. Joy

PS if you'd like the wording I use in a letter to a superintendent register, I'll happily let you have it when I am home from work. Joy PPS yes, that straightforward!

Yes please Joy - thank you very much. I was just thinking what to put in the letter. I wasn't sure if I had to ask for an application form (like the ones on BMD) to fill in or just ask outright for Certificate. I said I was a dimwit!! lol Thanks again Joy. xx :-)

You are not a dimwit! when I wrote for the first time the wording was given to me by someone else! don't ask for a form. I'll write again later when home. Joy

Okay, back home now. Here is an example of a letter, (without my address, for privacy reasons), I have written to a Superintendent Registrar after having seen my great-great-great-grandparents' gravestone. And it is a pleasure to share with you the inscription. btw I always send the letter in an A5 envelope with a 1st class stamped self-addressed A5 envelope enclosed. Hope this helps. Joy Mrs J A Gant Superintendent Registrar Deben Registration District The Register Office Melton Hill, Woodbridge Suffolk IP12 1AU Dear Mrs Gant I wish to obtain a copy of two death certificates which I believe are detailed in your registers: for Jonathan Sadd who died 4 May 1874, and for his wife Sarah Sadd who died 7 February 1852, according to their gravestone detailed below:- "JONATHAN SADD who died May 4th 1874 aged 84 years. Oh the sweet joy this sentence gives, I know that my redeemer lives. In affectionate memory of SARAH SADD who died February 7th 1852 aged 62 years. We part in hope to meet again. Erected by their daughter Mary Ann Dyball." They died in Little Glemham, and were buried in St Andrew's, Little Glemham. Just inside the gate of the churchyard, under a yew tree, is a grave that has a large double headstone with the above inscription. I enclose two cheques for £7 each. If you cannot trace the records as detailed, please return them to me. With grateful thanks; and thank you again for the help you have given me in the past with information about my family, Yours sincerely J S Dean (Mrs) Enc: cheques, SAE

Manda if it is in Yorkshire is he on Yorks BMD? If so the site prints out an application form to the correct office. Not all areas covered yet but one to remember. They have records that are not on 1837/free BMD. Bob
