I've hit a bit of a brick wall in my search for my birth mother and I'm wondering whether anyone has any pearls of wisdom as to what to do next. Thanks to the General Registrars Office in Southport, I now have my original birth certificate, her birth certificate and info on her parents marriage. I also know that she has since goit married herself and had a son. I'm just not sure where to go from here. I'm 40 miles away from where all this was registered and the electoral roll for the area (Warrington) isn't available online. Does anyone know if there's any way I can find out who lived at the address on my birth cert when it was registered and who lives there now without physically going to Warrington to search the recs?????? Thanks

You could try and find a researcher in the area. You'll have to pay but without actually going to the place I can't think of any other way.

Alyson, It may be worth you finding a telephone number for the library in Warrington and asking them where they would keep electoral roles for the year you are after. In theory there is always an archive of them kept somewhere locally and I have always found that the library is the best starting point. They will only be able to search the electoral role by address but ask them about what local directories they have such as Kelly's or Pigots which are searchable by name - if the people you're after weren't at the house where you were born then you may be able to find them this was (NB the directories tend to only have the name of the head of the house) I have tried to find a number or email online for you but I keep getting pdf pages which crash our work computers Best of luck Zoe xx

Hi Alyson I was even further away from where my birth was registered - I rang the local library and they looked up the 1964 electoral roll while I waited! So it will be worth a try. From my own experience, may I suggest that you have some help with the initial contact with your birth family. It is best if someone experienced makes the contact on your behalf, as you really don't know what the reaction will be. I used Norcap - couldn't have managed without them - but there are other sources. I hope all goes well for you! Good luck and very best wishes, Mandy :)

alyson, after years of searching through different agencies etc. i finally found mine by going to the library, getting all the phone books for her area of the country and calling everyone with my original surname. i eventually found an aunt who put us in touch. hope your result is better than mine though, i wish i'd never found her!! paul...
