I noticed that someone said they left their card no. on Ancestry whilst taking the chnce of the free trial. I read the conditions when trying to find out what the fee woulf be and I discovered that when your free trial period expires, they just begin to charge you without any further informing you.it is just automatic. I think you should have notification from them that your free trial has expired and you should be asked if you want to continue. Rose By the way I think rootsweb and Ancestry are under he same umbrella,LDS

Hi Sue , I had an email earlier in the year to say that my credit card had been used or stolen fortunatly my emails don't open for 30 seconds so i was able to read it and promptly deleted it . I phoned my credit card company and they checked it hadn't been used and advised me to cut my old card up and have a new number which i did and it only took 3 days to arrive [not seven as they said] this was done as extra security. These emails are like the one's that come through asking for bank details, by letting your credit card company know you have a concern you have covered yourself by letting them know , should of course your card is used which i doubt .

Thanks all for your replies :o) and thanks for looking for me Terri. No Ann, I didn't recognise who the E-mails were from, but I post on so many genealogy sites that I often get replies from unknown people. I NEVER open any unsolicited attachments though. I use my debit card online so I can keep an eye on my spending easily. It's also strange that I keep getting notified of replies to postings on message boards that I haven't made. When I replied to a particular posting it showed someone elses name. Now I seem to have taken over her identity:o( I'll let you know if and when I get a reply from Ancestry. Sue

obviously I can't be sure, but my guess is that it's a hoax, the attachment probably contains a virus. In deleting the mail, but contacting ancestry, you've done exactly the right things. Paul

No, but I had a free trial with Ancestry and so gave them my card details, so I am worried now. Who was the E-mail from? Was it someone you recognised? Perhaps someone on this site with an ancestry subscription could have a look for you, to confirm if the contents of the e=mail is true. Have you actually noticed any fraud on your card- I would have thought if your details were readily available then someone may have tried to use them. It might be worth just checking with your credit card company.

I just received an e-mail from someone telling me my details, including credit card, are on Ancestry for all to see. This is the 2nd e-mail I have had telling me this. The first one had an attachment, which I deleted without opening it, and said this showed the details. I have e-mailed Ancestry about this, but have not had a reply yet. I have never subscribed to Ancestry, the only thing I have done is post on Rootsweb boards and left my e-mail address. I certainly have never given them my credit card details. Do you think this is a hoax? Has anyone else had this problem? Sue
