How expensive is it to use the census? I admit I've caught the bug but don't want to bankrupt myself as I continue to feed my addiction. Thanks :-)

John the 1881 census is free on the LDS website www.familysearch(.)com The 1891 and parts of the 1871 and 1901 are available on ancestry - which you hav eto subscribe too. My subscription cost about £70 for the year - but the amount I've saved from not having to pay per view on the official 1901 census is more or less covering that fee. Ancestry does three month subscriptions as well - but it'd be worth checking that the 1901 and 1871 cover the areas you're after before joining. If you don't have a huge amount of look ups there are always people on the Records Office board willing to give a little of their own time to help other members out with their searches Zoe

It is free to look at the 1841/51/61/71/81/91 census on microfilm at the FRC in London and at County Record Offices - although they probably only have the bit for their county. Also you can order bits of the census at your nearest Latter Day Saints/Mormon Family History Centre. Rest assured they are NOT allowed to talk to you about their church/beliefs. Maz. XX

Hi John Freecen also has census on it and is updated reguarly as the transcriptions are done, sussex weald also has 1851 and 1881 on it for some of the sussex villages. hope this helps sandra

Bec, the FRC is the Family Records Centre in London, in Myddleton Street. Even if other kind people on this site do look-ups for you, it is well worth a visit, when / if you can get to London, to go there and see what it's all about. Joy

Hi Becx, Try going into your nearest big library and ask for their Family or Local History section. Many of them have census records online or on microfiche. Some libraries will also have the Birth/Marriage/Death index on microfiche and also some Parish Records. Many of us on here also have access to Ancestry to the 1891 some 1871 and some 1901 census records. If you post requests on the Records Office Board we will do look-ups for you. Good Luck Maggy

First ring your Library to see what they have. I have tried Camberley & Bracknell and they are quite prominent lirbaries, but they have zilch! The nearest to me is Reading, headache to park, even more to get through, and all they hold is basically 1837-now on fiche, other that, is's all local stuff. so check first Kim

John Ancestry also now do a pay to view package - you pay something like £7 and you can see I think about 20 census screens for that. Karen
