Hello Jane, I remember many years ago, when my kids were in primary school, they organised a parent's dance etc with the theme of the 1940s. The first half of the decade was, of course, WW2, while the second half was austerity and rationong etc. So most of the folks came either in uniform of various kinds, or as Mrs Mop etc. The headmaster was dressed as an RAF pilot, with weedy stick-on moustache, while his deputy, who was a dab hand with a saxophone and actually played in a local jazz band, came in American army uniform as Glenn Miller! I decided to cheat, as I had a beard, so I wore a roll neck sweater with hired naval uniform plus badges etc, and came as a U Boat captain. Surprised some of them, but I on the first prize bottle of whisky for best male attire. Can't have been bad! When I lived in Wiltshire, we often went down to Stourhead (the big National Trust house & gardens) for their July fete champetre. Many places do it now, of course, but picknicking by the lake, sideshows, music & dancing etc, followed by fireworks, and with a costume theme for the year, is also great fun! Philip

Well If I was able to ride, and could borrow a horse, I might try arriving as Lady Godiva, If I could find a suitable wig, as well.........That would get tongues wagging.LOL

This Saturday is my local family history society open day. Someoen on the committee susgested that this year we all dressed up so most of us will be in some sort of costume - nothing fancy I may add. I am a parlour maid - frilly aporn and mop cap on top of long black skirt and blouse. The treasurer is coming as a Viking woman. There were strong Viking settlements in this area. The Chairperson is going to be Lady of the manor. All i know is her hat has lovley feathers! Even the man who works in the local reference library & has a stall may be wearing some sort of costume. So what would you come as? Jane PS everyone is welcome. St Cuthbert's Church Hall, Churchtown, Southport This Saturday 11-4.
