Something I don't really understand...................why, when I go abroad does the country I'm in have their flags flying everywhere? I've just come back from Scotland and I noticed it there as well. Why don't we? Apart from using it as a football symbol. It's just a thought. By the way I have a union Jack in my garden! Jo.

I totally agree. I'm proud to be English and would have St George's flag flying from my house - if my wife would let me! :-)) Union Jacks go on ships and Union Flags go elsewhere though.

I am sorry to have to say this, it is not meant to be a racist remark, but from from I read in newspapers - the flag itself may be considered a racist comment to those people who are not English/British. If you've ever heard of anything so daft! Magsx

i know because it's deemed as offensive to other races.are they forgetting whose country this is and what the flag means to many of us.to me it means unionship(the union flag)patriotism proud to be british which i most certainly am.fly it in any other country and that's fine but here if we do it then we are commiting a crime.i have the union flag in my garden.and my new car had a E.U mark on the back which was completely covered with a st georges sticker as i oppose having that c**P anywhere near my car.so if it is law to have that filth called the E.u ring on my car.ARREST ME!!!!!!xxxx(:

I live near a hardworking 'ethnic family' who were pleased to fly the England flag and support them during the sporting events. It's the 'do-gooders' who are a problem sometimes, rather than the families.

Well said Gwyneth,i was talking to a local whilst on holiday in north wales last spring ,and he was saying that the government frowned on the welsh flag on their cars because it could provoke racial tension. What a load of twaddle i would like to see our government try to force this train of thought on a scotty ,an irishman or a welshman and get away with it ,it,s the government itself with their daft policies that cause all the agro, not joe bloggs in the street who wants to get on with his or her life in their own way.Fred.ptfg.

I think there is two things here. The Union Jack is the flag of the Union (UK) which consists of The St. George's Cross for England. Blue Cross for St. Andrew Scotland, The Welsh Red Cross for St. David and the Red flag for Northern Ireland. The St, George's Flag is the English flag, not the Union Jack as such . In Northern Ireland they use the Red Flag of Ulster witht he red hand of Ulster but to provoke the Nationalist Community they use the the union Jack, Football hooligans when provoking people in the stands or elsewhere used the Union Jack, so did the British National Party, when I was in the anti Nazi League, we would walk behind the ENGLISH Flag proud of it but determined that these people who wanted to intimidate anyone did not do it in our name. Its what the Union Jack now symbolises that is the problem, and it is a great pity that we have been robbed of one of our National Symbols a flag of unity that was and is used by people who believe in dis- unity. I really like the look of the Union Jack but I hate the way its been used as a sign of racism and intolerance by the BNP and the so called loyalists and football hooligans. Ah well that's off my chest. Pat x
