My mum's family was very poor. They grew up in the 1930s and her dad had no regular work in all that time. He poached a few rabbits, and did whatever he could - blacksmithing, chauffering, farm work, etc. My mum yearned to have an Ovaltiney mug, but never did. Years later I bought her a replica, which I think she broke! Now, an old age pensioner, she says she is living in the lap of luxury compared to her childhood. Many people don't believe how grim things were until the welfare state. At one time she and her sister had one coat between them, so took it in turns to go out. She also missed school until her father had earned enough money to buy some nails to repair her shoes with. nell

I vaguely remember hearing the song, but definitely remember having "ovaltine" mugs - beige, melamine type things. I think my mum has still got them! Can remember the smell too - mmm! Frances
