Jean I understand perfectly - I even thought of that myself earlier!! Had a little fiddle with the 1881 for you (if you pardon the expression!) and wondered if that was why they were so elusive. Durant is not that common a name -may be worth a trawl throught the death's and marriages. Don't forget to look at Durrant too! Best of luck and see you soon!! Maz. XX

There are no people on earth like geneologists. We are all so happy when someone makes a breakthrough. Thank you all so much. Maz, Have made another break through, I think. Might have found a marriage for my greatgrandfather. If so he was a leather dresser from Lambeth. Now toying with the idea that great grandfather died and great grandmother remarried and my grandad, on a census, is under his stepfathers name. Confused? you will be. Will try to get to the 27th meet. It would be lovely to see you again and make some more friends. Jean x.

How fantastic for you Jean! One thought - I wonder if his father was an army man too - maybe that's why he joined up in the first place. Perhaps the family travelled with the army -that could be one reason why you can't find him in 1881 or 1891. Nice to see you get a bit of good news though! Look forward to (I hope) seeing you again on 27 Nov. Maz. XX

Crista, How kind of you. Yes he did marry Beatrice (my grandmother). I have them at home on 1901 without Grandad. Puzzled for some time before thought he might have served in the Boer War. No mention in the family that he could have been a soldier. You can imagine my delight on Monday at Kew, where I had gone out of desperation, to find that he had been in the Army since 1891. Came out in 1897 but was held in reserve and in 1899 called up for South Africa. Kew is a very quiet, staid place and I had quite a few frowns when I punched the air shouting yes, yes, yes. Thanks for your time and kindness. Jean x.

Jean, Did he marry Beatrice Alice Frizel? I have her and their son on the 1901 census if you need it. Crista

As I may have mentioned before I have been unable to trace my grandfather, James Henry Durant's birth and despite lots of help from people on this site have not found him on any census. Knew he was born on 14.4.1874 but not where. Made by first visit to Kew yesterday. Found my grandfather's Army records. (Fantastic detail). Gave his place of birth as Borough, Surrey. Next of kin as mother Margaret. Still can't find him but really feel as if I may be getting there. I have written this as if I am calm but believe me I'm shaking all over. This is just a wonderful hobby when 2 small pieces of information can make you feel a million dollars. Jean x.
