Yes we had pigeons sometimes when we had a smallholding, nice if you can manage to keep the pellets out. I even got a dab hand at cooking blackbird in the microwave!!, We tried squirrel too, but they weren't worth the effort, Used to breed rabbits for meat at one time, then found it easier to get the wild ones, would love to have rabbit again now. David, Hubby loves wild pigeons, partridges and rabbits. I could never eat them, especially the pigeons. My late Dad used to race pigeons and I help hand raise a whole lot of them that were "kicked out of the nest" Lindy;-))

David that sounds so good. I too lived in the country and will admit to plucking and pulling pheasants and skinning rabbits. There is nothing lke the hunger of the war years to knock the airey faireyness out of you.No such thing as supermarkets then. We had our own hens in little arcs in the orchard and the same for rabbits. We grew our own veg and can remember being really told off for bringing in a bunch of flowers for my mum. Ihad picked all the tomatoe flowers off ! I did a lovely pot roast like you have just described with a ham joint last week, lots of different beans. Rose

Hi has anyone eaten wild pigeon (yeh i know it would be wild if you ate it). A friend brought me 9 that he had shot, (because they eat the crops they have to be culled). Well i thought why not. So i thought 9 a hell of alot, rather than pluck and gut the lot i just removed the breasts, bunged them in my slow cooker with all sorts of vegies and mushrooms and a fair measure of red wine, it was'nt half bad. apologies to the faint hearted and vegaterians among you but we poor hard up country boys have to live of the land to eyck out our meagre pensions.
