8th Irish Liverpool Kings regiment

Hi does any kind person have any links with the 8th Irish Liverpool kings regiment . My Grandfather was a private in the regiment 1914 - 1918 his name was William Ryan and he Lived in the West Derby Road area of Liverpool .he was pensioned out of the army and formed his own Banjo Band and played the pubs of Liverpool throughout the twenties and early thirties any one with any information at all i would be ever so grateful Keith

Hello Keith. The King's Liverpool Regiment had 30 Battalions during World War One. The 8th (Irish) Battalion The King's Liverpool Regiment was one of them. The Liverpool Irish was raised as the 64th Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps in 1860 and contained Irishmen then resident in the City of Liverpool. The Corps was renumbered as the 18th in 1889 and redesignated 5th (Irish) Volunteer Battalion, King's Regiment in 1888. In 1900 members from the battalion served with the regular battalions of both the King's and Royal Irish Regiments (Boer War) The 8th sent 2 Battalions to France in WW1, 2nd Lt Baxter of the 1/8 won the VC in 1916. A 3rd battalion provided a reserve unit which was absorbed into the 7th (Reserve) battalion in 1916. The battalion was disbanded 31 March 1922. Regards. Keith
