Ann - I'm not sure about Cromwell. He reformed our political system, yes, but when he was Lord Protector he was just as bad as the kings and queens of that time. His son was Lord Protector after him, not through election but through inheritance. Surely that's practically the same as the systrem he was fighting against? Jenner invented Penicillin, didn't he? And he was English. As for Shakespeare - after all the annoyance of having to read his plays and study them, I don't think he's the best Briton ever. He was clever in his writing, but so have a lot of other authors before and after him. Chaucer, Austen, Bronte, Byron, Dickens etc |

Penicillin - Alexander Fleming, although some theories say that others did all the work and he just happened to reap the benefits! Jenner - smallpox vaccine |

Have you noticed how the men never think any woman is famous. Just reading through these replies shows male dominance, or do I read them wrongly!! Sylvia xxx |

It is alleged that Pontius Pilot was born in Fortingall, Scotland and if so, surely he has got to be the most famous Brit. Christine |

I nominate Isaac Newton. He was not a very nice man but neither was Brunel who ruined a lot of people. Len |
