Like Maz, I too have had an out-of-the body experience. Apparently, as is common with such events, I had memories of what went on in the operating theatre whilst I was "dead". For a fuller exploration of the theme, see Tracy Blackburn's thread "Life after Death". There is current research into the phenomena. I have been catapulted through the air from a motor-bike (without a crash helmet), having time to think "I wonder if everything finishes here". During the war I was shot at (and shot back). I have had two heart attacks and each time thought "this is it". A near death experience gives one a different slant on life and makes one more philosophical. No matter what the experience , even a bad one, if survived it can always be used to one's advantage. len

I don't recall this, but when I was about 2 I got an old (pre-decimal) 2d coin stuck in my throat. I staggered into the kitchen and my mum said I was as blue as the dress she was wearing. She picked me up, turned me upside down and thumped me in the middle of my back. Out fell the coin, I took a deep gasp, and yelled "You hit me!" nell

IWON'T GO INTO THE DETAILS which are horrendous, but I was badly beaten up ,tortured and left for dead ,when I was serving in Hong-Kong. Through out the whole experience I was up at ceiling level watching what was happening to me. My mind was working on a number of levels all at the same time, and can remember observing which way the hairs grew on the arm of my assailant, whilst also thinking 'oh God please don't let my children find me' I have taught myself to view the whole experience as a video nasty and that is how I deal with it. When the nightmares start I just say I'm not watching that again and visualise myself takng a video cassette out of the player and putting it to the back of the cupboard. They are less frequent with the years. YOU MAY LIKE TO KNOW THAT ALTHOUGH I WAS ON HM SERVICE I RECEIVED NOT A PENNY COMPENSATION AND MY FUTURE CAREER WAS RUINED. rOSE i wonder how long it will be before this is removed.

Some of you are an insperation to us....but this is my son's tale...he was driving his car late one night with his mate as a passenger, the date was 7 Feb 2001, they went down a country lane late at night no lighting and a bad bend, it was also raining, due to his lack of experiance he breaked on the bend, loosing control he left the road went on a dirt track and parked his car between 2 trees, the front window came out in 1 piece, drivers door flew open and passenger door stuck fast his mate had to climb out of the window he fell out of his side which was in a ditch, the police arrived and took them to hospital, not driving slow I hasten to add, causing both young men to feel nervious, his mate was released the same night, my son was kept in over night with a bruised heart, I was with him until 4.30 in the morning until he was settled for the night, that was exactly 1 week before I got married for the second time, it was also my youngest sons birthday, it could have been a lot worse..for those of you who live in Devon arount the Newton Poppleford area, you most likly saw the car it was there until a Hi-ab lorry could lift it out...needles to say the car was a right off, both boys fine now but the effects lasted for some time. Hi Lisa, Many moons ago, when I was working for British Railways and they still had steam engines, my mate Alf and I were standing with our toolbags waiting to cross the line. A shunting engine was pulling some wagons along the line so we stood against a concrete fence, about six feet from the side of the engine. As it passed, one of the wagons came off the rails and hit the fence twenty yards from us. We stood petrified as the engine pulled it nearer to us, destroying each concrete fence panel it passed. The train was only going slowly and the driver saw what was happening and stopped just in time, the derailed wagon only ten feet from us! There was no life passing before my eyes, nothing but sheer terror and panic, because there was nowhere to run. We went into the Club that night and bought the driver and his mate a pint. Bernie.

A good few years ago, when I was a young dad to two small daughters, we were holidaying in Woolacombe, North Devon. Whilst they were building sand castles, and mum was watching the world go by, I went for a swim in the sea. I used to love diving into the rollers. I was well within the area marked out as safe for swimmers. All very normal. After a while it suddenly occured to me that I was having difficulty standing up although I was still within my depth. With every ebb of the sea the sand I was standing on was receding at an alarming rate, taking me with it (I believe it is known as undertow). The more I tried to struggle to shallower water the weaker my legs became - they were like jelly by then. Absolutely drained of energy, unable to propel myself to safety I gave up. God didn't want me that day; the next wave threw me into shallow water, and somehow I managed to drag myself clear of the water and stagger to my horrified wife and kids. After some minutes I recovered. When I looked out to the spot I had come out of the sea it was a long way to the wrong side of the flags. Unbeknown to me the currents had taken me that way. Strangely, although the beach was fairly crowded that day, no-one had noticed my plight; if they did they ignored it! I nearly became a statistic that day. My wife nearly a widow and my daughters fatherless. Brian
