grandparents...are they all mine

I once read a thread on how many grandparents, gt and gt gt and gt gt gt grandparents etc we have does anyone know the answer to this or where I can find the thread LYnn

Hi Lynn Assuming you are not including adoptive parents, you have 4 grandparents (2 maternal and 2 paternal). They each have 2 parents so this means you have 8 great grandparents. Again, each will have 2 parents so you get 16 great great grandparents. And so on, 32 g-g-g-grandparents, 64 g-g-g-g-grandparents etc etc Sam

As you can see from the replies, the grandparents multiply by a factor of roughly 1000 every ten generations (1024 to be precise) So a million ancestors twenty generations ago, a billion ancestors thirty generations ago (roughly 1066 AD). a TRILLION ANCESTORS forty generations ago. Now where was that thread about cousin marriages...! Brenda
