Which is best - a list or a database?

Thanks for the advice folks - am likely to go with a list - that will mean a simple cut and paste job from Excel, where all the data is stored. A database may come later - (a lot later?) If I have the time over the next couple of months, I'll hint build up a website, and drop a hint of its title on the forum Steve

At the moment a list would be easier for you. Once you have a family tree program - most magazines have free software on their cover CD- then a gedcom is easiest. Try a few programs to see which you like. Bob

Not actually the answer to your question but is any of the information about surnames that are registered with the Guild of One Name Studies? Members have an obligation to share information when asked and they are always happy to receive new information in order to do this. There is a searchable list of names on their site online.

Whilst pretty new to genealogy (only started last December), I have accumulated information on several hundred surnames I am researching (mostly just data from the various BMD sites.) I have noticed two ways that lists of surnames are presented on the internet. One is just a list (a google search on "Stickland Database" will take you to a site that has a "basic" list). The other way is a database such as the one on the "Love surname" (access on "lovedatabase" with a "dot", a "co" a "dot" and a "uk" added after). If I were to share the surname information, which may be of interest/use to those with the same names - what is the best method of doing so? A list, or a database? The list method is far easier for me to do - just cut and paste the info from MS Excel to MS Frontpage. I would not know how to compile a database - but would be willing to learn, if this is the best way forward. If a database is better, any pointers on what program to use, and how to do it would be appreciated. Thanks Steve
