Thanks everyone for your comments. I had put my details on FR a few years ago, and joined at the time, but after a year I felt I had had all the use I was going to, I had contacted all the old friends I wanted to, so I did not renew. My details are still on the site, but I have not used it since then. Now this friend has contacted me- I did not make the contact so I am not asking anyone to 'subsidise' my use, but I do think I should be able to reply to her- otherwise she has paid for a service , which she cannot fully use, as I cannot reply- and she would not have known that unless someone from this site replied. That is my point. I have paid for this site as I feel it represents much better value, but I do not want to pay another year on FR as apart from replying to this friend I feel I would never use it- £5 for one E-mail is not good value!! Anyway, perhaps 'nuff said on this subject, message has been deliverd so thanks for all your kind offers!!! As usual, friends on this site have come through for me!!!

Rosemary., I would presume that they will have to join to contact you. I must investigate to discover the advantages of paying on both sites. Oh yes, when someone contacted me through FR, he left his email address in the message. And we get email addresses from GR members in the same way if they want to give it. Click on the person's name to make contact. Joy

Hi Joy, yes I was glad in the beginning that I paid the subs because I've now been back in touch with my best friend for about 3 years, but I won't bother renewing this time. If anybody doesn't want to pay the £7.50, I still have a little while left on my membership and would be happy to pass on any messages. Just let me have the details and I will make the contact if I can. Mandy :)

Mandy, I susbcribed to FR after seeing the name of a former school friend and we were pleased to be in contact again. And have recently been told my membership expires soon - being 26 October having had a look. But £7-50 is downright robbery especially considering all the thousands of the same amount from this site! Joy, yes it went up not that long ago, seem to remember someone telling us on here. I think GR is far more worth the £7.50 than FR! Seems to have gone off the boil a bit. Ann, I'm also a member (not for much longer though!) so if you need a back up to Sean's offer, just let me know. Mandy :)

Just out of interest have had a look at the parent site FR, and see membership is £7-50. Joy

I didn't know people could leave details without being a member. I thought the point was that you could search the paying members basic info for free, but if you wanted to join in & get more details & contact specific people then you had to pay. Seems fair to me. Otherwise the paying members are subsidising those who don't pay. And a fiver a year is hardly a huge amount. Try before you buy!

Thanks everyone. I did not know that on this site also, you cannot reply unless you are a member. I knew you could not make the first contact, but assumed if someone e-mailed you that you could reply- after all they have paid to use the service, but what is the point if half the people on the site may not be able to reply to you. Will get off my soap box now but I feel this is wrong.

I am not a member, I remember that happened to me ages ago. So some kind person emailed them for me and gave them my email address. It was a bit confusing but we got there in the end. It is the same as this site you cant reply until you have paid to be a member. Debbie

I have just had a message from someone through Friends Re-united, but when I tried to reply I was told I could not as I am no longer a member- I was surprised at this as the contact was not made by me, but a paying member, who now will not get a reply unless I can call on help from some kind soul. Is anyone still a full member, and if so could you help me by passing on a message to my friend- I do not want to leave her waiting for a reply, thinking I m really rude for not answering. If you can help can you please let me know direct, and I will give details- Thanks!!!!!
