My pet rat Lady, died peacefully today at the grand old age of 2. I don`t think she suffered and their usual lifespan is between 18 months and 2 1/2 years. Worse was burying her and cleaning out her cage.

awww my symapthies to you, I had a pet hamster that got electrocuted, I was devastated. It may sound cruel, but it sometimes helps to replace said pet. Regards, Lisa

So sorry Carol We lost our two lady Berkshire rats a few years ago within a short time of each other and were devastated - they were a rescued mum and her daughter and although I never thought I'd ever have a rat as a pet I fell in love with them completely and miss them terribly. The only reason I've not taken on any new pet rats is the cats - Tilly and Ferdy grew up with the cats and were best mates with the cats - even going nose to nose with one - but the new young cats I have would not be used to them and so would not be inclined to be friendly I fear. If I ever have kids I will definately get them a pet rat as they make brilliant pets for kids as they hand on with their little claws and don't move as fast or squirmily (is that a word?) as hamsters and the rats are so intelligent they can learn tricks and learn to come to their names. I am really sorry for your loss. Take care - Maggie

Thank you all for your kind words. That is the problem with animals who naturally dont live long. I have heard of rats living for 3 or more years but that is very rare. The thing is that I knew she was close to the end but it was still a shock. Seems strange not hearing her nibbling in the background. We may get another one later on, not sure yet. thank you all once again.

Carol, We had 3 rats and they died 2 years ago.We still miss them a lot,our boys talk about them all the time.Unfortunately hubby won't let us get any more. We'd had gerbils and hamsters before but rats are definitely the best,so clever and intelligent.Whenever they see rats in the pet shop oue sons always ask if we can get some and always feel sorry if there's one on their own as they aren't supposed to be kepton their own.I tell them that when they leave home they can get rats and I'll rat-sit for them when they go on holiday, they are only 10 and 11! Poor little rat, I know how you feel. Perhaps you will find another one who needs a home. Jo X.
