Here's one I don't think we've done before. Mistaken meanings. For example:=

I thought Pubescent meant someone you picked up at the Pub.

Some sort of perfume perhaps? .......

I had a german friend who thought Rabies were baby rabbits- I had to keep a straight face though as I did not want her to lose her confidence in English, made me giggle though...

And there was the person who though a Myth was a female Moth.

My sister thought pirate videos (ie. illegally copied) were about pirates!

My kids laughed at me when I thought Garage music was what mechanics listened to while they worked! Christine

Not so long ago ,i myself thought rescue dog meant an animal in switzerland with a barrel round it's neck .was my face red when someone ,or two, rolled over laughing as they put me right.[well .if you can't laugh at your own mistakes?] Fred.ptfg.

When in Los angeles a few years ago, my daughter had been visiting friends. and at home realised she had left her keys/handbag( purse) at the friends house.drove back there, and it was now a bit late, and had to wake them up. when they aswered the door my daughter apologised profusely about " having to knock her up!!!) not realising it meant something entirely different!!!!!!!!!LOL

i knew a guy who wanted to change his name by interpol???

Almost in the same vein... My sister didn't realise that in the song 'Respect' by Aretha Franklin (???) she was spelling out respect in the chorus. My sister used to sing along shouting random letters of the alphabet during the chorus. She is blonde though.... :-) becx

When my boys were little we had an AllStation Dog, as one of them could not say Alsatian and the name stuck Rose

I've just remembered taking the boys to see Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang. Our youngest was two and a half. When the song started he joined in at the top of his voice SHITTY sHITTY bANG-bANG and because it had raised a laugh from all around us he kept doing it for weeks after.

My daughter's au pair kept talking about the 'buggers' in the street - it took a while before I realised that she meant 'beggars'! lol The second au pair they had would often ask what words and phrases meant (we do use a lot of phrases and idioms and we never think how they might sound to foreigners) but the best was trying to explain the word boll***s - she had heard the word and could she/should she use it??? After explaining it, literally and otherwise, I said she could possibly use it with her mates (as an expletive) but not in front of her mother! lol Magsx
