Hi, They only know it's Christmas if they are of the Christian Faith, to other faiths it means nothing. I give money out of my pension every month to my chosen charities, and I refuse to give the government any more of my money through the tax that will be charged on the disk! John.

Me too Donna. Charity does begin at home and there are many deserving causes in this country that receive little or no other funding apart from charity donations. I wonder how many others think that way, but don't like to admit it? Sue - ducking from the flak! Ouch!

It'll be interesting to see what they come up with all the same, and see if it has the same impact - I still get goosebumps when I hear the original. I just watched a prog earlier on BBC3 about the making of it back in 1984 - it was great to see all those artists from my heyday again. And they did say that the record was a collecters item now! Where's me ladder - must get up in loft and find that box of vinyl ;P

LONDON (Reuters) - Twenty years after the release of one of the biggest singles of all time, leading artists are set to re-record the Bob Geldof-inspired charity hit "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Geldof and Ultravox singer Midge Ure created Band Aid, a supergroup of 40 artists, in 1984 and with the hit single raised over 10 million pounds for famine relief in Ethiopia. A spokesman for Coldplay said the band had been approached by Ure and were awaiting further development on the project. The Sun said rockers The Darkness and Scottish group Travis had also signed up to re-record the single and bookmakers immediately tipped the song as a favourite for the Christmas number one. "It's definitely going to happen," Ure told The Sun. "I'm very excited. This project is not just about raising money -- it's about putting the focus back on Africa and the problem of famine which has not gone away." Geldof, who travelled to Ethiopia earlier this month as part of the British-sponsored Commission for Africa, became the public face of Band Aid and the subsequent Live Aid concert which raised over 60 million pounds. U2 frontman Bono, George Michael and Queen were all part of the first Band Aid but The Sun said Ure and Geldof would talk to Robbie Williams, Jamelia and Noel Gallagher about joining the 2004 line up. The "Do They Know" song has already been re-recorded once, in 1985.

I think part of the reason that each appeal raises "so little" is that there are just so many charities around... I think if you added up how much each one raises each year you'd find it was a fairly considerable sum. I know I can sleep with a clear conscience though, I give considerably more than £1 a week... I'm sure there are many that don't give at all tho.

Unknown Report 21 Oct 2004 16:30

Well I disagree with you actually, I think they'd sell more with a newer version - the old one's been out countless times and sold millions. I just wont be buying it myself (either version !)

Time for a Victor Meldrew. I am saddened by the fact that all these Fund Raising Events raise so little. There are over 60 million people in these Islands. £1 a week each would raise billions to aid those in need. And I don't believe that there are very many so poor that they would object to giving something towards a better lifestyle. Unfortunately it seems that, in many cases, as one's income increases so does one's lack of interest in the welfare of others.

Lisa

Lisa Report 21 Oct 2004 16:27

i agree paul.i think if they reissued the old version they would sell more.have to hear the new version but feel that they should think again before releasing the new version.xxxx(:

Unknown Report 21 Oct 2004 16:24

Surely the original sold so many copies that it would hardly be worth reissuing ? Myabe they could record a new version and put the old one on as an extra track. I won't buy it if it's rubbish, good cause or not - I'd rather just give the money than buy something thats bound to be recorded by atomic kitten, blue, busted, girls aloud etc etc
