We've just looked at all your replies, and had a good laugh. I thought Selena's sounded quite grand, till I thought about it! "Llamedos" comes to mind, too (work it out!). John's house sounds quite exotic; Jo's sounds nice, learned something there - but what language? Blimey Maggie, the postman won't forget that name! Very original. I like Sylvia's house name, too. Jackie - I've heard that one before; nice one, eh! I have to say though, Paul has the most original house name! Ours is 29 and no, we're not calling it Glob! Bob, myself and the kids refer to it as Laird Manor, not because it IS a manor house (we wish!) but Laird Semi doesn't have the same ring to it ............ Thank you all for your replies, and thanks for your stories! Glenys x

We named one of our houses "Torestin". Actually taken from a D.H. Lawrence book - my favourite author. TO REST IN Sylvia xxx Funny you should add this thread as I too had thought about it last night but you've beaten me to it. Good luck!

THIS IS A TRUE STORY. I was a signwriter before I retired and I used to paint house names on rustic wood and varnish them. Many people used a mix of their own names to make the house name. I remember a lot of them: 'Phylemy' for Phyllis and Jeremy; 'Josephand' for Josephine and Andrew; 'Gillefran' from the surnames Gillibrand and Francis. etc.etc.etc. One day I was putting the finishing touches to 'Forecroft' and I had an audience, included the guy who had asked me to paint it. One of the audience said, "where did you get the name from Jack?" "My wife and I made it up from our surnames - mine is Foreman and her maiden name was Crofting". A voice from the back said, "good job it wasn't Skinner".

One of my rellies named her house "Ciudad" As you can tell, she loved Spain, but also, that is what her son said every morning.

My partner and I have been thinking of a name for our house for ages and have just decided to use a name made up from our initials and the cats! We will now be Mcfabbodt Rest! Don't expect anyone else will have that one! Maggie

I recently found a distant relative on Gc - she told me that my Gt Gt Grandparents named their house Danmar. I knew he was Dan but didnt know her name - It led me to Martha Raymond. If we all named our houses after us it might help the search for ancestors !? My grandparents Edie and Ralph Cooper named their boat Edralphco - rather a mouthful!

I knew some people called Shirley and Tony- they called their house Shirltone. He once remarked drily "lucky we didn't just use the first 3 letters of each name!" A

What do you think of houses that are named with a mixture of their owners' first names? I've seen names like "Yvorge", "Gor-Phyl", "Thel-Ken" "Ire-Ton" and "Phyl-Len", to name but a few! Others I've seen sound really nice, so Bob and I are going to call our house "Glob". Glenys.
