I used to suffer from them as a teenager, not so much now. I found the best way to deal with them was just to let it drip into a sink or bowl until it stopped (usually a couple of minutes), clean up any excess and just avoid blowing my nose for 24 hours.

Hi Sandra, your hubby's right to have tests, to rule other things out. It's probably just a small rupture in a blood vessel, maybe caused by a knock or a bad cold originally. I'm like several here--had terrible bleeds as a child. I often woke up with my head in a pool of blood. It would literally pour out of me--very scary, and embarrassing when it happened at school. I had my nose cauterised as a teenager, and this more or less stopped the problem. I still get occassional bleeds, but not nearly as severe as they used to be. Cauterisation is painless. They freeze your nose (just with lint soaked in something) then they put a long thin stick up with a heated end, which seals the rupture. It's a very quick procedure. Hope this helps!

Our son (27) has had them all his life (I suspect after a fall when he was a toddler, he fell on (and travelled on) gravel and was a right mess. His nose was cauterised in hospital about 14 years ago but he still gets them occasionally. Watch out for air travel (pressure in cabin as take-off and landing) and bad colds (musn't blow too hard). Not life-threatening, just a blinking nuisance for the sufferer.

Hi Sandra, I've suffered nosebleeds since I can remember and never knew why. Two years ago I discovered that I have a type of heamophilia(I'm now 30), and that this has been with me all my life! I do have to be more aware of bleeding from injuries but, it's never stopped me from doing anything. I have played rugby, judo, boxing(although against advice) and other martial arts, and apart from having pills occasionally and twice yearly trips for check-ups, it's not as bad as the name suggests. Although it's unlikely to be the same for your hubby, I just wanted to say that if you are told something like this DON'T WORRY, it'll make very little difference to his life. Also if it's something he's lived with all his life, it's done him no harm over the years has it? One thing the doc's did say was that stress causes everyone to bleed more than usual, and also causes nosebleeds! Craig

I hope your husband is OK i GET FREQUENT NOSE BLEEDS. Mine are always when my blood pressure goes up. I am quite glad I get them really as I see them as a safety valve. The pressure is released there instead of another stroke. I've got some funny ideas. Rose

Hi Sandra Have just seen your thread and it has been helpful for me too. By coincidence I have been having nosebleeds for about 2 years which have gradually got more frequent until just over a week ago they had got so bad that I went to the doctor and he cauterised it for me but I am still getting them. I didn't realise that they were so common and feel a bit better about it now. I would really appreciate knowing how you husband goes on. Regards - Chrissie

I suffer occaisionally, usually stuff a piece of tissue up my nose 'till it stops. On a lighter note a friend of mine woke up Christmas morning a couple of years ago with a very bad nose bleed which wouldn't stop, so she called an ambulance. They had to laugh she is a paramedic and drives a fast response car!! Look out anyone in the Yeovil area. Ros

I'm 39 and suffer with them. I did have my nose quaterised when i was 6 and it stopped it until I was 27 ( pregnant with my first child) . Now I get them after a cold. My son is 8 but has since he was 5 been having nose bleeds for no real reason. he'll have one in his sleep thankfully he wakes up . I don't think it's anything to worry about . Wish you well
