Never liked my forename- never had a christian name - not christian! I always wanted to be called Maria, but as my elder sister is called Anne Marie, that was out of the question! lol I now answer to Mum, Margaret, Maggie, Mags, and even Mops (my dad's name for me) maggie

Annie

Annie Report 26 Oct 2004 00:17

Gwyneth Your reply made me laugh. We did the same in our German class in school and I became ... Renata (erm?) Annie

Lynn

Lynn Report 25 Oct 2004 23:52

I hate my name ...Linda and have for as long as I can remember insisted it be Lynn. One of our daughters is Caren and I never thought it could be shortened but when she was at school she was called Caz. Katie another daughter Hates it and is now Kate. Andrew our son is known and spells his name Ande Lynn

As I've mentioned before, I grew up in Hampshire and knew no one else with the same forename, in fact I've never met anyone with that name but on here there are at least 3 of us (although different spellings ) I've had plenty of time to get used to the name now but in school I wanted to be 'ordinary' as people had trouble spelling it. When we had French lessons we had to have name cards on our desk with the French version/equivalent of our names. Now I ask you......???? I was Yvette.

Melba64

Melba64 Report 25 Oct 2004 23:17

I like my first name but not my middle name. Most people call me Mel which is why I use it on here but I was baptised Melanie. Even my mum calls me Mel and she used to hate it when people shortened our names. My sister was baptised Mandy because my mum said she would get called that anyway if she was baptised Amanda. Mel

Luciacw

Luciacw Report 25 Oct 2004 23:08

I like my name because it is unusual - I've never met anyone with the same name as me. People sometimes pronounce my name as Lucy-A instead of Lu-chee-A which really annoys me. Lucia

Rachel

Rachel Report 25 Oct 2004 23:02

Yep Paul, sorry, just me being pedantic about my name! It's difficult when you have to guess on spellings. One of my neices is called Teri-Jo and when my sister told me i thought how on earth do you spell that? I also remember reading in a book (think it may have been guinness book of world records) that in one year the name Jacqueline was recorded as having been registered with 26 variant spellings. Hmmm maybe everyone should stick with traditional names, but then when searching for ancestors looking for a good old Mary or George etc can drive you insane, especially when paired with a common surname.

I'm perfectly happy with mine athough when I was growing up my dad would never allow anyone to shorten it to Jo (his name is vincent so he can't talk as he calls himself vince!). My sister's mother in law's name is Edna and she hates it so goes by her middle name of Jean. So you would have thought she'd be a bit more sympathetic when she decided to name her son (my bro in law) Neville!! Joanne

Rachel I know several Rachels, but also several Rachaels including my niece - cut us some slack it's awkward not knowing - I blame the parents lol !! It's like Teresa and Theresa, or Tracey and Tracy - you just have to guess...

Rachel

Rachel Report 25 Oct 2004 22:48

I like my first name, it only bothers me when people add an extra A into it and make it RachAel. My mum says she named me after a nurse when she was having me (spent a lot of time thinking it up then!) and I don't have a middle name either. My dad wanted to name me Elizabeth after his mother which I wouldn't have minded as long as I didn't end up being called Lizzie. All in all I think I prefer Rachel though, and as for the thing about jewish names I sometimes get asked if I am (I'm not) as it's a popular jewish name but now there seems to be Rachel's everywhere!

David, I always liked the name of David but in the Netherlands all Davids are Jewish so my husband wouldn't have our son called David. Nothing to do with anti Jewish, but we are not Jewish so why give our son a Jewish name? Karen, could be mixed up with Karin I suppose. I don't like names which are shortened, but somebody will always find a way of shortening them for you. My youngest daughter is Susan, but mostly called Suus, Suzanne here, my second daughter Janet, is Jan and Adriaan is Adrie. Sylvia xxx

I've never been that happy with my forename (sorry to be pedantic, but why is it referred to as a christian name, I'm not a christian). Paul just so... dull. you can't do anything with it.

Sam

Sam Report 25 Oct 2004 22:28

I was never happy 'cos I never had a middle name. when I was a child, we used to play a game called 'Letters in your Name' and you basically took a step forward for every letter that the person who was in charge called out. Due to my lack of vowels (other than 'A',) I invented a middle name of Joanne - purely to give me and 'o' and an 'e'! I was named after the character 'Samantha' in the TV series 'Bewitched' which was popular in the late 60's. Could have been worse I suppose!! Sam

I am now happy with both Helen and Nell, but as my mother reminds me when I was younger I wanted to be called Jenny - I think because I disliked being called Hell's Bells at school. I also like my middle name, which is Ruth. My poor mother-in-law hated all her names - Edna Maud Doris - can you blame her! nell

Yes Sylvia, I'm one of them!! I've never really liked my Christian name, and of course at school I was often called Gladys (sorry to any Gladys' out there) which I hated. Throughout my life I've always had to correct people on my name. And I've never seen any keyrings with my name on, sob sob! Oh well, I suppose it's better than G-t Face, or something similar.
