Just to add balance - my mother-in-law, who died 10 years ago, was absolutely lovely and I miss her very much, especially at Christmas. Sadly she took her recipe for chocolate rum charlotte with her when she went! BUT her mother was a bit poisonous. She used to make notes after we'd visited saying we'd only stayed half-an-hour. She was always fainting, or going to have an attack - emotional blackmail was her forte. Never a headache, always a migraine, she never bled, she always haemorrhaged. My m-i-l lost her first baby (he lived 2 minutes) and then had my husband, and 5 years later, his brother. When she returned from the hospital her mother said "You can't have any more. You can't put ME through all this again!!!" nell

Oh that made me laugh....sorry.. Good on the old girl for using her IQ Getting a meal out on xmas day is difficult enough lol Take her words with a pinch of salt. If on Boxing day she makes a big thing of it, that she said she had no family....laugh along with it. Tell her what a good idea it was and you think shes really clever for thinking up such a story to get a meal. Dont take the bait when she throws acid your way and shell have nothing to fire at you. And in your drawer, when the day is getting strained, take out that little figure & stick those pins in !! Glad you have saved your day to yourselves Elaine x

Oh dear - I'm a mother-in-law, I do hope I don't cause as much grief to my son-in-law and daughters-in-law. I do try to remember that I was once a daughter-in-law and my m-i-l was a cow!! Kathleen

Going by all of your mother in law stories on this thread, it makes me feel better not because there is someone else suffering from the old dragon syndrome, but because you all seem to be managing to keep that barrier up against their acid tongues and enjoy what really matters most in life. So I have decided to grab the ball by the horns say a few things that I am sure she will not like to hear and be damned with it, and if anyone else in the family wants to follow her I will personally hold the door open for them. Phew! now I feel much better - ready to rock and roll. Lin

Sorry Lin, did not mean to sound rude, but I just think life is too short to waste time on this woman, if she only seems to bring trouble into your life i would not put up with it!!

Sorry to hear what you're going through Lin, if it's any consolation, there are worse mums out there, as I have THE mum from hell. Hope you get through it soon. Regards Lisa

Cut her out of your life, now!! Life is too short. I had to do the same with my evil mother in law. She's been a cow for ever, but when my 2 year old son was close to death in hospital she said my mother tried to run her over outside (my mother hadn't even been in her car). That was so evil I'll never forgive her or allow her in my house again. Thankfully my boy has recovered and is now looking forward to his fourth birthday. Jacquie

Hi Lin, I have problems with my family too, well on my dads side i do, Kath who is my Nan, if thats what you can call the dragon is also a huge two-faced backstabber! same as my aunt and my uncle. To be honest the only decent people from the Dale family (apart from me of course) would be my late Grandad and my dad (well sort of anyway!!!) they are liars and decietful, and they couldnt give a s**t about anyone but themselves!!! If i were you, i would get the will sorted, these things are owned by you and hubby, its for nobody else to say what goes to who!!! xxxxx

Elaine - LOL Di - my mother used to roll her eyes when she was 'very poorly' - but only when someone was looking! Lin - you have my utmost sympathy. Did you know that lily of the valley is poisonous? Next question - do you have some in your garden??? lol
