Very sad news indeed. Along with Bob Harris, he was one my favourite people to listen to on the radio. Also enjoyed his stint on BBC2s Grumpy Old Men. He will be much missed.

I'm absolutely gutted. What a lovely, lovely man with a great family life which he combined with a wonderful career. Saturday mornings will never be the same without him on Home Truths. This week has been terrible. First Lynda Lee-Potter and now John Peel. I feel SO sad!

It's always your heros isn't it? Hendrix, Hailwood, Moon, Lennon etc. Now Peel! Bugger. Rock on John!

Such sad news. He was such a great man and was such a big influence on my life as a teenager. I cried so much when I heard the news. I heard a great quote on radio 1 earlier "if God is a DJ he is now out of a job!". RIP Estelle :0(((((

My sympathy to his family. I never really forgave him for launching Tyrannosaurus Rex on their path to success.

Andy

Andy Report 26 Oct 2004 19:51

Piss off Geoff, I saw Rex live in 1969 and they were BRILLIANT! Peely could always spot talent!

I came in fromwork and heard the news. Radio 4 have just had a special 'Front Row' about him. The end of an era, and the demise of a true gentleman, who will be sadly missed, not only by his family but generations of people. maggie

Lou, my wife loves The Cure! Did you see Smith on Jools Holland last Friday? Fat old Git, but he's still got it!

I'm so sad for Sheila and the kids. But I can picture him now, in a bar, in heaven with John Walters, Ian Curtis,Marc Bolan,Bill Shankley and Bob Paisley, having a pint and talking about Liverpool's glory years. (Though I think Ian and Marc might not agree!) Sorry, can't agree, Morrisey never had it as far as I'm concerned. Heard the Smiths in 1984 when they played Glastonbury, we were camped in Castle Cary and walked in to Pilton. The whole way all we could hear was Morrisey drowning on and on. I remember Peel coming out with the memorable line "Here's a new group, UB40 and next week I be 41!" and I was listening when he played Teenage Kicks twice in a row. Went out the next day and bought it.

He will be sadly missed..... much love and support to his family at this very sad time and continuing on into the future as they move on. Like thousands of us, I grew up with him on the radio (believe it or not - I was a punk in 1976 / 77)... what a guy!!! RESPECT John Peel Gaynor Ann xxx <feeling empty very old>
