Are the family local to the area in which you live? You need to right down all you can that the members of your existing family can tell you. Get them to write on the backs of old photographs who is in the photo and what their relationship in the family is. Find your nearest Record Office and go along. Say you are just beginning and ask for help getting started. Go with a file anf paper and plenty of pencils. No pens, not allowed. They will show you how to begin. There are indexes for BMD, and Census. You look up your family name in these and with luck you will begin to find connections. There are also local Family History groups which meet in your area, they will be pleased to help you get started. Info from Local library. There are good publications which you can find on most newsagents shelves. Some excellent web sites. 18370nline will help you find records of BMD hOPE THIS MAY BE OF SOME HELP

Hi Sarah, You might be better putting this on the Tips ot Records Office Board. If it is living people you want found there is a thread on one of the boards. If you type the name into the Name Search on the green strip to the left of this message you will find 44 Offen's born in Hastings and 947 overall. Hope this helps. Rose

sORRY sARAH,i TOOK IT FOR GRANTED THAT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT ANCESTORS. If you want to find living people then the local electoral rolls which are at every council office can be very useful, but you have to go in person. Some people offer search facilities on the Record Office Board
