He was the last man to be publicly hung in Manchester. Wow, what a distinction, pity I have no link to him. Actually he was a distant cousin of the one who had had a twin. Jim

"In 1868 a murder took place in the vicarage and this is a story which can be fully read elsewhere. The basic facts are that Miles Wetherill was courting a servant at the vicarage called Sarah Bell. Sarah had gone home to York and Miles had followed her, where he learned that another housemaid by the name of Jane Smith had been causing mischief between the sweethearts. He returned to the vicarage, killed Jane and also injured the vicar, Rev. Plow, and his wife. The vicar died from his injuries and Miles was sentenced to death and hung"

I was going through the list of people executed in England and I came across the following:- Hanged 4 April 1868, Miles Wetheril for the murder of Rev. Mr Plow, and his maid, (for revenge) at Manchester. The name was familiar as I had seen Miles Weatheralls in early Wensleydale, and sure enough there were two possibilities. 31 Aug 1829 spinster Mary Wetherald had a son Miles baptised at Askrigg, Yorks 18 Sept 1830, also at Askrigg, Labourer James Weatherald and his wife Ann (nee Metcalfe) had their twin sons Richard and Miles baptised. Sadly Richard was buried 30th December the same year. The question is, Could either of these had contact with Rev Plow? Was he the father of one of them? or had his actions caused the death of the other's twin? Please use your imaginations, get the little grey cells working. Jim
