My Grandfather said before he died that His Flight (He was in the newly formed RAF Regiment) was directed the wrong way by a french person and they ended up in Cherboug instead of Dunkirk and were evacuated from there instead. Has anyone else heard of this happening to other troops? My grandfather said there were many troops who turned up at Cherborg.

Haven't heard this, but my Grandfather was among one of the last group to leave Dunkirk, he came home on the Destroyer HMS AJAX, Thank God..

I have just had a look at 'Ask Jeeves" thats on *********** http://www.ask.com/ ********** type Cherbourg in the box reveals an index - the first one you open reveals a map of The Cherbourg Campaign I also looked htttp://mamma.com/ ********** and then found this site which tells the story of Cherbourg Campaign - http://www.lonesentry.com/gi_stories_booklets/4thinfantry/

Hi again I had another look by putting "Cherbourg and RAF" and found this The Pilots of 41 Squadron RAF - M 10 Group's Circus C-1 to Cherbourg, France, on 15 April 1942, whilst flying Spitfire Vb, AB987 of 234 Squadron. (Source: RAF Fighter Command... brew.clients.ch/PilotsM.htm

I can remember my father saying there were troops from Cherbourg too. He was too old for the army, he was a bus driver, one day as they about to go out on local bus runs, the army walked in and took them over, driver and bus and directed them to pick up soldiers etc as they landed back here. June
