I'm wondering if anyone out there has heard of a "Ragged School'! My dad who was the youngest of 10, grew up in Ramsgate, went to (what he called) the "Ragged School", had to leave when he was 12 to go out to work! I'm guessing it was a school for 'poorer' people - anyone come accross this terminology??

Helen, I also found info on Google. A realy good site is www.maybole.org/history/articles/historyof raggedschools.htm. Basically these were non fee paying schools with I guess todays standards having a charity status. Good luck Debs

Some of these 'ragged schools' were run informally by the upper class under the heading of 'charitable works'. They weren't always for children, adults too were taught to read and write and given basic maths skills. Magsx

Thanks for this info - I will try google - also the your web site Deborah. I've often wondered just what these ragged schools were - I'm an Oz, and am really fascinated with the history in. your country - visited UK last year and did ask some locals in Ramsgate if anyone knew anything of these schools.
