Hi, I am currently researching my family history and have discovered that my great grandfather and his brother are not listed in the indexes of births for their appropriate birth years, 1843-45 and 1847-49. Is it possible that the family did not register their births? Did this sort of thing (not registering births) happen, or am I looking for a possible surname change? Regards, Brian Spencer.

Birth registration did not become compulsory until 1875.

It is also possible that the names could have been mistranscribed as something quite different I am afraid !! Many were. Chrissie
