I have a GGMx2, one Mary Ann Horstead who is shown on the census for Ratcliff, Stepney in 1851 as being 39 years old. In her death record she is shown as 55 years old when she died september quarter 1867. Now ........... am I therefore correcting in thinking that she must have been born from Jan - 31 March in 1812????? I have spent ages looking for this woman, finally found the youngest kid had a birth record, sent off for cert and find the mother's maiden name is Smith - what a lucky break, eh. But I want to have a bash at finding her, says born St George in the East on the 1851 census.

Here he is. It implies that she was born around 1812, but look 5 years either side. (That's 1807-1819) Lol Jim

Yes Jim is right - don't for one minute assume that ages on census or (particularly) death certs are correct! Very few people knew or cared when their exact birthday was - they were more concerned with the hardships of life in those days unfortunately. Best to take everything with a large shovelful of salt!
