Why did Jesus cross the road? Because he was nailed to the chicken!

The patronymic system was not in use then. The given name usually preceded "son of". Examples of "son of" in various languages are Ap, O' , Mac. Ben, Bin etc. etc. Of course, sometimes the name preceded "of" (de) or "from" (von or van) indicating a location. len

Camberwell Beauty, I loved the idea that the death on the cross was purely symbolic within his faith which was Essene, and that his rising again on the third day was part of the same ritual. The writers claimed that he left the middle east with his wife Mary Magdalena, who was later cast in the role of a whore by the Members of the Early Christian Church because she didn't fit into the idea they were trying to put about that he was the son of God and therefore had no carnal knowledge ,to settle in MARSEILLES ,WHERE THEY RAISED THEIR FAMILY. The writers maintain that descendants of this family married into the reigning families of the day and this made it possible for the Royal Households to claim Kingship by divine right. Something which caused Charles1 to lose his head. It was claimed that they all have the blood of Christ in their veins. The Sangue Regale or holy blood bacame corrupted to Holy Graille in translation. It never was a material object but a belief that they carried the blood of Christ It doesn't do thinking about really does it,as that would mean that Charlie Winsor,or Charlie Mountbatten as he should be is a descendany of Christ.NOW THERE IS A HORNETS NEST TO STIR UP

Have you not heard the one about the Irish and the Scot arguing because his name was Jesus O' Nazareth.

Ramblin Rose

Ramblin Rose Report 2 Nov 2004 07:24

Jesus was a common name in his day.He was Jesus Bar(meaning son of)Joseph of the House of David.Have you ever read Holy Blood,Holy Grail,it is a fascinating read.It puts a new slant on the story of the life of Jesus of Nazareth. To Name him we have to put his lifetime in some sort of historical context. At that time we would have been Ben McBain,Ben son of MaBain or Ben of Townsend Later corruption would become Ben Townsend. So Jesus may have been Jesus Joseph or Jesus Nazereth Yes I was always taught that the insxription over his cross read Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews,as you say Roman mockery

So true - Joseph took Mary as his wife. Surnames in those days did not existed if they did it might have been Carpenter for that was Joe's job.
