What was £1000 in 1890 worth in present day terms?

Does anyone know of a website which allows one to convert monetary values from a date in the past into present day values? eg to understand how much a relative left in a will? |

I don't quite believe it (but did it twice) £1000 in 1890 has the same purchasing power as £654223.02! (in 2002) Perhaps I've done it wrong! Magsx |

hiya i have a will for 1892 and the sum was £600 and some one told me which website to go on sorry i have forgot but in 2002 it would be worth £ 37-000 |

I'm always very sceptical about these conversions - the things you could (or could not) buy 100 years ago were so different. £1000 would buy a few houses I would imagine. |
